When Seniors inherit a loved one's possession, its value may depend on sentimental attachment rather than on a monetary value. I remember my mother's old Singer sewing machine and how I was able to learn to sew on it -- making a few outfits and one long dress.

Because of this memory, I wanted to preserve the machine and cabinet, but had doubts about how much it would cost.

The wooden cabinet was badly scratched and the machine was dirty and dull. Luckily, a local sewing center had an expert who cleaned and repaired the machine. Instead of spending hours to restore the finish on the cabinet, I decided to paint it black.

Pleased with the result, I now have preserved a memory and have a functional sewing machine that sews straight stitches and can thread a bobbin. So, for a little over $100, I have a valuable and functional keepsake.
